Police are investigating after they say they found a dead woman in a plastic bag on a Manhattan street Monday evening.

NYPD officials said the woman was discovered on the sidewalk at East 124th Street and Park Avenue in East Harlem around 6:30 p.m. MTA police called NYPD officers to the scene near the elevated Metro-North Railroad tracks on the avenue, according to the department.

The woman was unresponsive and emergency medical workers declared her dead at the scene, officials said. Police said it was not immediately clear whether she had any physical injuries.

The city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to determine how the woman died. Police said they’re trying to find out her age and identity.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and may be updated.
