Wednesday night a woman who bodyslammed her dog on to the pavement drew a crowd at North 7th Street (and Driggs) in Williamsburg. At around 9:30 p.m. she allegedly began throwing things out her window before walking her dog downstairs and throwing it to the ground. Though there's no word on whether or not the dog survived the ordeal (many witnesses said it was panting and barely alive), we've confirmed with the precinct that the woman, 30-year-old Alexandra Mendez-Diaz, has been charged with animal torture and marijuana possession.
According to Brooklyn365—who first reported the story—New York penal law 130.20 states: "A person who overdrives, overloads, tortures or cruelly beats or unjustifiably injures, maims, mutilates or kills any animal, or deprives any animal of necessary sustenance, food or drink, is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by imprisonment for not more than one year, or by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars, or by both."
Yesterday, a commenter who witnessed the scene said the woman was proclaiming to be "The Queen of Brooklyn" before she walked into the intersection and, as officers approached her and the crowd looked on, picked the dog up over her head and slammed it into the street.
