A woman who attempted to break up a fight on a subway platform was hospitalized on Wednesday morning after a man struck her over the head with a metal pipe, police said.
The incident occurred just after 7 a.m. at the Herald Square-34th Street subway station. Authorities say that the 28-year-old woman was waiting for the train when she attempted to intervene in a fight between two men on the northbound N/Q/R platform. She was subsequently attacked by one of them, who can be seen on surveillance footage wielding what appears to be two portions of a metal cane.
The woman suffered lacerations to her head, and reportedly required four staples to close the gash. She was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
The suspect fled the subway platform on foot. He's described as 5-foot-8 and in his mid 50s.
While overall crime continues to plunge throughout the city, transit incidents increased slightly this year, according to the NYPD. Reports of subway crime are up 2.5 percent, while assaults have increased by 4.8 percent since this time last year, police said last week.
Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime stoppers website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577. All calls are strictly confidential.
