Memorial Day brought with it more violence to the increasingly gritty West Village when police confronted "a roving band of feisty females" early Monday morning and had to call for backup when the loud ladies refused to leave. One of the 20-odd women on the corner of Barrow and Seventh Avenue even managed to escape a cop car and made a poorly planned run for freedom!

The scene went down around 5:30 a.m. when two officers encountered the women arguing amongst themselves on the corner. The police asked them to leave but the ladies refused. Instead, according to the police and witnesses, they turned their anger with each other and focused it on the po-po, swinging and screaming until backup was called. At one point, a woman who had been cuffed in the back seat of a squad car managed to get out and make a run for it, leading to a short chase and tackle before she was back in the car.

"It was chaotic and out of control," a witness told the Post. "These girls gave them a good fight."

Eventually two of the women (aged 19 and 17) were arrested and charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Two others (aged 20 and 18) were issued disorderly conduct summonses.

The West Village has been dealing with rowdy youths—especially on Sixth Avenues and over by the Christopher Street Pier—for quite awhile now but when the police are involved they normally don't create such a scene. At least nobody pulled a knife.
