Today's weather is all about the wind. As a cool air mass heads into the area following last night's frontal passage we are going to see sustained winds of 20-25 miles an hour this afternoon with gusts to around 40 mph. The wind alone is not quite as bad as yesterday, when a wind gust topped out at 53 mph at JFK and over 60 mph along the Connecticut coast, but today is going to be 15-20 degrees colder than yesterday. It's 44 degrees in Central Park as we write this and the mercury is going nowhere but down today. Look for it to be in the upper 30s by early evening.
Tomorrow will be the coldest day of the week by far. After a morning low in the upper 20s the weak sun and westerly breeze will keep the temperature to the upper 30s. That's actually just a smidge below normal for late December, but the temperature this month has been anything but normal. If the forecast for the next few days goes as expected this should be the fifth warmest December and tenth warmest year since 1869, when regular daily measurements began in Central Park.
Our next storm will be on Friday. This one looks like it will pass too far north to bring significant precipitation, but it will warm us up to the upper 40s for Friday and the weekend. The best chance of rain will be during the day on Friday. New Year's Eve is expected to be fairly calm, weatherwise.
