Brrrr… An honest to goodness cold day! A low temperature in the single digits! Can you believe it? It's been nearly two years since it has been this cold. To be exact, the last time it was this cold was on January 28th, 2005, toward the end of an eleven day cold snap. Our current cold snap? A pathetic two days.
That's not to take away from the sting of today's cold. The artic air mass responsible for the chill is centered over western New York this morning. Combine that cold air with winds of 15-25 miles an hour and you've got the makings of a nasty day. The temperature may get up to twenty degrees today, but the wind chill will remain at or below zero until the winds subside late in the afternoon. Wind chill only affects exposed skin, so wear a hat and gloves and wrap that scarf around your face.
If you see someone on the street that appears to need assistance, the NYC Office of Emergency Management says to call 311 and ask for the Mobile Outreach Response Team. The Department of Homeless Services will send an outreach team to check on the individual's condition. If you suspect someone is suffering from hypothermia or frostbite, either bring that person to someplace warm and seek immediate medical help or call 911.
As we said, this cold snap is short-lived. Temperatures will actually begin rising this evening, and we'll warm up to around 27 by tomorrow morning. Saturday and Sunday will top out around 40, with a slight chance of light snow tomorrow and rain or snow on Sunday.
