Welcome to the Year of the Snake.
Lunar New Year celebrations are ongoing in New York City, with several free and low-cost events taking place this weekend. The NYPD is also warning some events could bring extra traffic.
Road closures around each of these events may take place at the NYPD’s discretion:
Saturday’s Lunar New Year Parade in Queens runs from 1 to 3 p.m., and lines up on Union Street between Northern Boulevard and 37th Avenue. The event includes Chinese Freemasons Lion Dancers, performances by a local singer and crafts with the Asian American Arts Alliance.
The parade will travel through the following streets before dispersing on Main Street between 37th Avenue and Northern Boulevard:
- Union Street between 37th Avenue and Sanford Avenue
- Sanford Avenue between Union Street and Main Street
- Main Street between Sanford Avenue and Northern Boulevard
The annual Brooklyn Lunar New Year Celebration & Prosperity Street Festival, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, lines up at Eighth Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets. The event includes local vendors and performances. It'll travel down Eighth Avenue to 60th Street, where it will disperse.
And another Lunar New Year Parade begins at 11 a.m. and lines up on 18th Avenue between 61st and 62nd streets, 61st Street between 17th and 19th avenues, and 62nd Street between 17th and 19th avenues. The parade will travel along 18th Avenue between 62nd and 84th streets, dispersing at 18th Avenue between 84th Street and New Utrecht Avenue.
The city Department of Transportation has further weekend traffic advisories for events, road work and other potential disruptions here.

After about two decades in (mostly) New Jersey-focused commercial print, digital and digital-but-radio-adjacent news, Lou stumbled into member-supported news in early 2021, as the editor and CEO of Montclair Local. There, he (hopes he) expanded enterprise, brought more sophistication to digital storytelling and moved the nonprofit newsroom closer to long-term financial sustainability. He helped lead the Local to its fourth consecutive General Excellence award from the New Jersey Press Association — the NJPA's highest honor with judges noting the paper's work to strip away layers of government opacity, to hold power to account, to make news accessible for more members of the community, to share the stories and concerns of more facets of the community and to tell compelling stories across multiple media. He's excited to continue the same ethic — news as a public service — at NYPR as the New Jersey and suburbs editor, drawing on the extraordinary talents of reporters including Karen Yi and Nancy Solomon. Lou lives in Philly (that commute!) with his partner and their two cats, about whom and about which he speaks incessantly.
