We've seen rain inside the subway stations—this subway waterfall photo is the gold standard in crumbling infrastructure porn—and witnessed water leaking inside plenty of older subway cars, but this is the first time we've spotted a good gusher inside one of the newer trains. It's always good for a laugh—as long as you aren't the one getting sprayed with scary city juice. This video was taken on an N train this morning by writer Kristina Monllos. Gotta love the defeated expressions on everyone's faces:
Monllos says she took the video between 8:10 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. this morning, going from Atlantic/Pacific to Union Square. "Whenever the train would shift a lot of water would come out, and it didn't seem to make a difference if we were underground or going over the bridge," she writes. "When I got in there was already a bunch of water, and people had to keep getting up from seats because the water would start coming down on them."
We emailed MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz because we were curious if this is an emergency way for trains to flush out excess water, or a malfunction—and if so, how it happens. He replied, "Next time someone submits a video like this, ask them to include a car number." (One of those days, we guess.) But if you get a good subway rain video, be sure to get the car number in the frame. Also, for the millionth time, please turn your cell phone horizontally!
