A Bronx man has been charged with murder after his van allegedly ran over a father of two on the sidewalk. Police say 22-year-old Henry Lawrence murdered 32-year-old Derrick Callender with his 1998 Toyota Sienna shortly after midnight on Saturday.
Police sources told the Daily News that Lawrence had tried to make a purchase at the liquor store at 666 East 233rd Street in Wakefield and "left in a rage" after he was asked for his ID. Lawrence then returned to the store with a knife, the sources say, but was chased out by a clerk with a bat.
Callender was walking down the sidewalk with his 2-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son when he dropped a DVD he had just bought to watch with his children, and leaned over to pick it up. That's when video surveillance shows Lawrence's minivan jumping the curb up onto the sidewalk in front of the liquor store, fatally striking Callender.
Callender, a married father of five, was pronounced dead at Montefiore North Hospital.
Lawrence is charged with two counts of second degree murder and one count of manslaughter. “I can’t believe my baby’s gone,” said Callender’s mother told the Daily News. wiping away tears. “They were cowards—they got up and ran away.”
