[UPDATE BELOW] A 15-year-old girl is dead after jumping off a building on the Upper West Side this morning, according to authorities.
The unidentified teen was pronounced dead outside 711 Amsterdam Ave near 95th Street, at around 10:40 a.m.; the Daily News reports that she jumped from the building's roof, and police sources tell the tabloid she may have had a history of psychological problems. It's currently unclear if she resided in the building.
The investigation is ongoing.
If someone you know exhibits warning signs of suicide: do not leave the person alone, remove any firearms, alcohol, drugs or sharp objects that could be used in a suicide attempt, and call the U.S. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or take the person to an emergency room or seek help from a medical or mental health professional.
Update 3:53 p.m.: The Daily News identifies the deceased as 15-year-old Jayah Ram Jackson. Jayah, who lived two blocks away, reportedly jumped off the roof of her grandmother's 27-story building, gaining access through an unlocked door. "She went straight to the roof," a neighbor told the tabloid. "The doorman let her in because she visits her grandma in the building all the time. She just went up to the roof, and she jumped."
