[UPDATE BELOW] Investigators are still searching for two Staten Island boys who were separated from their mother after her car became submerged during the Hurricane Sandy surge on Monday night. Connor and Brandon Moore, ages 4 and 2, were reportedly "torn from their mother's arms" after they abandoned the water-logged car on Capodanno Boulevard.

The mother, Glenda Moore, was trying to take the boys to a shelter when the car stalled in flood waters. She took the boys out of their car seats in attempt to carry them on foot, but they were separated by rushing waters. The Staten Island Advance reports:

After managing to swim out of the flooded marsh, she desperately began seeking help from neighbors, who refused to come to her aid, police said. Officials believe the mother was stranded in the area by herself until 8 a.m. when she found a police car and desperately told them her story.

Investigators have been searching the marsh area behind the 400 block of Capodanno Boulevard for the past two days, and have resumed the search today. We'll update as more information becomes available.

Update 2:14 p.m.: Heartbreaking: The Staten Island Advance reports that the bodies of the two boys were found in a marsh near a dead-end road behind Capodanno Boulevard, around 11:30 a.m. today. "They were about 15 yards apart," an NYPD spokesman tells the Advance. "We found the 2-year-old first, and shortly thereafter, about a half hour later, we found the 4-year-old." This brings the Hurricane Sandy death toll in NYC to 36.
