[UPDATE BELOW] Is The New York Times website loading for you? Because it isn't currently loading for us and seems to be down for others. So what's up? Still unclear! In a tweet the Times said "We're aware that nytimes.com is down at the moment. Our tech team is working quickly to restart it."

We do know that a group called Occupy The New York Times has it in for the paper of record, but no one from the group has taken responsibility. Speculation that the group was able to take down the site is just that, but for what it's worth, the Occupy New York Times Facebook page the group explains itself like this:

The New York Times is considered the newspaper of record around the globe. Thus far, the paper's coverage of the Occupy Wall Street Protests, protests around the nation, and the accompanying police brutality have been lacking, to say the least. The New York Times has the power to move public opinion and political winds, but has chosen to remain relatively silent. It is ludicrous that the most influential newspaper in the world is essentially ignoring significant activism and oppression within walking distance of their offices.

We ask that the New York Times live up to their journalistic responsibility and provide serious and sustained coverage of these protests, the abuses of certain police officers, and the systemic unfairness that is burdening everyone who is not a member of the financial elite.

Of course, the whole thing could just be a glitch on the part of the Gray Lady's tech team.

Update: As of 1:24 p.m. it appears that nytimes.com is back online. Wasn't that exciting!

Update 1:35: A rep from the Times tells us that "there was some issue in our data center," that they were back up in about ten minutes and that they'll get back to us with more info as they get it. Interestingly, despite their tweet to the entire world, the Times spokesperson was under the impression the problem was only affecting their internal network.

Update: A rep from the Times confirms to us that, as far as they know, the sites downtime was "a routine problem and not an attack." They explain that "It was a problem in the data center. We switched over to our West Coast facilities as soon as we realized there was a problem so many people who were in the middle of browsing were unaffected."

As for a connection to the ongoing situation on Wall Street? Probably better put that one into the conspiracy files. Patrick Bruner of Occupy Wall Street was surprised to hear about the downtime telling us, "This is the first I've heard about it." He then added, "The Times has given us pretty decent coverage comparatively. If Anonymous is attacking them they're choosing the wrong people. But if that is the case, that is their decision. They have their own general assembly."
