An 85 year old retired doorman was mowed down on 84th Street and First Avenue yesterday around 5 p.m., as a driver in a gold Nissan slammed into him and drove off. Fredda Stimell told WCBS, "I'm not surprised. Sometimes the lights aren't long enough for elderly people to walk across and some of the drivers are not very careful." Having longer lights at crosswalks is something the city is trying to implement as part of "Aging-Improvement District" development, though the UES typically ranks high for the most elderly-friendly neighborhood. Police went door to door looking for surveillance footage of the driver.
