A fourteen-year-old boy was arrested after allegedly shooting a woman and a teenage girl on the south side of Prospect Park yesterday evening. Both victims are expected to survive.

The shooting occurred just before 5:15 p.m. on the edge of the Prospect Park Parade Grounds, near the corner of Parade Place and Crooke Avenue. One of the victims, a fourteen-year-old girl, was shot in the left thigh. The other, a 38-year-old woman, was shot in the right side of her back. A Walk In the Park reports that the girl was sitting on a bench near Detective Dillon Stewart Playground when the shots were fired, and the adult victim was standing nearby, watching her son play baseball. Both were rushed to Kings County hospital in stable condition.

A witness told the Post, “I heard the shots then saw a young girl on the ground. She got shot in the leg two times. She was just walking, it seemed like she didn’t even know she was hit at first." According to the same witness, one teenager jumped onto a bicycle and rode away from the scene, while one or two other teens ran south.

The alleged shooter was arrested last night at 154 Lawrence Avenue in Kensington just before 11:00 p.m., the NYPD says. He has been charged with attempted murder in the second degree, two counts of assault, two counts of criminal possession, and two counts of criminal use of a firearm.

This week, the NYPD announced that shootings have increased considerably compared to 2014 levels. There were 128 shootings in the city last month, compared to 96 during the same period last year.
