Two people were shot and killed in separate incidents in the Bronx Tuesday – a violent start to the month in the borough which is otherwise reporting a nearly 30% decline in gun violence so far this year, per NYPD data.
Police said 27-year-old Javier Saul was shot in the torso at 3:35 p.m. in front of a building on Southern Boulevard and East 183rd Street, right across from the Bronx Zoo in Belmont.
Some news reports indicated that he was behind the wheel of a car when a shootout ensued with another vehicle, leading to a chaotic crash, but police did not confirm those details. Saul then reportedly called a cab to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where police said he succumbed to his injuries.
Saul lived just a few blocks away from where he was killed, according to the NYPD. Officials were still investigating the incident Wednesday morning, and said the motive behind the shooting was unclear. Police made no immediate arrests.
Just after 11 p.m. Tuesday night, police responded to another fatal shooting at a home on Mickle Avenue and Boston Road in Williamsbridge.
Officers found 31-year-old Jessica Hoyle with a gunshot wound to her head, and EMS workers pronounced her dead at the scene.
Police said she lived at the address, and officials said the incident appeared to have stemmed from a domestic issue. But the NYPD made no immediate arrests, and did not have a description of the suspect Wednesday morning.
Hoyle is the third woman to die of gun violence so far this year, according to police data compiled by Gothamist. A total of 36 New Yorkers have been shot and killed so far this year.
This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and may be updated.
