Two 16-year-old boys were stabbed and slashed in the Bronx Tuesday night after stepping in to stop a man from attacking a woman on the street, police said.

The attack occurred just after 8 p.m. near East 187th Street and Webster Avenue, where authorities said John Arce, a 28-year-old Bronx resident, was assaulting a woman in public. The two teenagers intervened, according to police, and Arce attacked them with a scalpel.

One boy was stabbed in the head, officials said. The other was slashed across the face.

Both teens were taken by EMS to St. Barnabas hospital in stable condition, according to the NYPD.

Police charged Arce with two counts of assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, they said. He had not been arraigned as of Wednesday afternoon and did not yet have an attorney listed in court records.

Officials didn’t know the identity or condition of the woman Arce was initially accused of attacking. Police did not say what led to the assault.
