Potential thunderstorms were expected to roll into the New York metro area Wednesday, capping off a hot start to the week and cooling things off before the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, a frontal system approaching from the west will bring chances of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m., with higher chances of rain starting around 5 p.m.
Meteorologist Matt Wunsch said the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued a marginal risk for severe weather for the region, meaning there’s a 5% chance one of the storms could be intense.
“ The main threat with any of these storms would be strong to damaging wind gusts up to maybe 60 miles an hour, accompanied with heavy rain and frequent lightning as well,” he said.
Possible heavy rainfall could cause flooding in some areas, but Wunsch said the storms will likely move too quickly to trigger widespread problems. The storms will be weakening by sunset, he said.
Thursday will bring another chance of showers and thunderstorms, though less so than Wednesday does, according to NWS.
Conditions are forecast to clear up in time for the weekend. Wunsch said Saturday and Sunday should be warm and dry, with less humidity.
The next chance of showers in the area will come late Sunday into Monday.
