Three people have died in an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease that has sickened dozens in the Bronx since July 10th, according to authorities.
A release from the Mayor's office reports that at least 57 people have become ill, and 42 were hospitalized for the disease, although 19 have since been released. The city has inspected 22 buildings in the South Bronx, and three of them—Lincoln Medical Center, the Concourse Plaza Shopping Center, and now the Opera House Hotel, have tested positively for the legionella bacteria. Lincoln Medical Center has been declared free of the legionella, while remediation efforts are underway at the shopping center and hotel.
The identity of the third person who succumbed to the disease has not been released, though health officials confirmed to the Times that he was a middle-aged man with "prior health conditions." The two other victims, a man and a woman in their 50s, also reportedly suffered from health problems.
Legionnaires' disease tends to spread through in water cooling or heating systems, and presents as an aggressive form of pneumonia.
