There are some mysterious bits and some not-so-mysterious bits to the current forecast. Let's start with the obvious. A shallow pool of cool air is shifting eastward over the region today. That will keep the temperature to the upper 30s or lower 40s this afternoon, which is just a couple degrees below normal for this time of year. The skies have been fairly bright this morning but look for the clouds to thicken as the day progresses.

Thickening clouds lead us to the next obvious bit: a warm front is going to pass through the city late tonight. There is a slight chance of some rain or snow but there is not enough moisture to support significant precipitation. More welcome will be the very mild weekend weather. Behind the front, Saturday should be mostly sunny and warm with a high in the mid 50s. Sunday won't be quite as sunny or warm but the temperature should still climb to the lower 50s. A cold front late Sunday night will bring a chance of rain or snow overnight and Monday will be cooler with a high in the mid-40s.

Now for the mysterious bits! A disturbance that is currently over the Pacific Ocean about midway between Hawaii and Alaska is expected to move across the country and up the East Coast by the middle of next week. Unfortunately the forecast models don't yet have a good grip on what path this storm will take once it draws near late Tuesday and into Wednesday. Yesterday they had it staying offshore, which generally means snow, but overnight the models had the storm to our west, making rain the more likely outcome.

The latest runs have the storm hugging the coast, which might give us snow Tuesday night changing to all rain on Wednesday. For now let's enjoy the pleasant weather this weekend and just say that some sort of storm is expected in the middle of next week.
