Bill de Blasio's taking a break from plotting his Stalinist takeover of the Western Hemisphere this week, jetting off to Puerto Rico with wife Chirlane McCray for a little post-election season R&R. O, the lives of the decadent!
But even on vacation, de Blasio's been doing a lot of political stuff—yesterday, he attended the annual Somos el Futuro conference of Hispanic lawmakers from New York in San Juan, accepted an award and spoke about his upcoming administration and January's City Council Speaker race. "Over the last 20 years, a lot of times when you visited City Hall or different agencies, it didn’t exactly look like New York City," he said. "So it’s time to go there again. It’s time to have a government that truly understands the people it serves."
The City Council Speaker race is a big one. With outgoing speaker Christine C. Quinn departing at the end of the year, the Council, which gained a number of new members during this week's election, has a big choice on their hands. Word on the street is that the de Blasio administration is pushing for the council to elect Melissa Mark-Viverito, who was one of de Blasio's early mayoral supporters; but the mayor-elect says he's not too concerned about it right now. "Right now, we're getting ready to retool and get going on the transition, so we'll worry about that a little down the line," he said at the conference.
Not that the de Blasios, who flew coach, have been indoors this whole time: de Blasio told supporters he spent Thursday on the beach with "my favorite person in the world."
Meanwhile, poor Dante—who may be getting an armed security detail, if he wants it— was left behind, presumably forced to receive millions of text selfies of his parents having a spectacular time without him. Whatever, Dante, you're still the coolest.
