School's a month away but if you want to read a textbook example of thunderstorms in the northeastern U.S. just look at today's weather maps. We've got a warm, extremely moist air mass overhead, a warm front and cold front on the ground ready to displace that air mass, and an upper level trough passing overhead to keep the convection rolling. It won't get hot today because of the cloud cover, but you can expect showers and thunderstorms, some with heavy rain and gusty winds and possibly small hail, this afternoon (if not sooner).
Showers and thunderstorms are likely overnight and again tomorrow afternoon. Saturday's high might reach the mid 80s. You can now follow all the action on the local National Weather Service twitter account. A cold front will slowly make its way across the region on Saturday night, putting an end to the rain.
Sunday's weather is looking much calmer and drier behind that front. Look for a mostly sunny day with a high in the mid 80s. True to the pattern this summer the dry weather will only last for a couple of days. Thunderstorms look to return to the picture next Tuesday.
