A 16-year-old girl who was headed home from work at Dylan's Candy Store on the Upper East Side was fatally struck by the driver of a tractor-trailer truck as she crossed Third Avenue last night. According to the NYPD, Bronx teen Renee Thompson was walking across Third Avenue around 10:15 p.m. when the truck driver made a right turn from 60th Street and killed her. The NYPD press office says EMS "responded to the scene and pronounced the female DOA."

The driver of the truck remained at the scene. Police sources told the Post he came to a stop about three blocks up Third Avenue. One passerby told the tabloid, “I’m coming from a restaurant and next thing you know she’s on the ground. She was, like, done. It was, like, instant.”

According to the Daily News, Thompson worked as a cashier at Dylan's Candy Store. A fellow employee said, "She was the sweetest girl. She never had anything mean to say about anyone. She was quiet, until she got excited."

We asked the NYPD press office whether Thompson had the right of way, and a spokesman said that hasn't yet been determined. The investigation is still ongoing, but so far the driver hasn't been charged.
