A 17-year-old girl is facing murder, manslaughter and weapons possession charges in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old girl in a Bronx smoke shop Tuesday, police said.
NYPD officials said they arrested the 17-year-old around 7:30 p.m. that night, a few hours after Aliyah Williams was taken to Jacobi Hospital with multiple stab wounds and pronounced dead.
Police said a verbal dispute in the store on Boston Road and Mickle Avenue in Williamsbridge escalated when Williams threw water on the suspect. Officials have not said what the fight was about or whether the girls knew each other.
The 17-year-old has not been publicly identified because she is a minor. Information for her lawyer was not immediately available Thursday.
NYPD data shows most types of major crimes, including homicides, are up so far this year in the 47th Precinct, which covers Williamsbridge and other northern Bronx neighborhoods. Six people were killed in the precinct as of July 13, compared with four by the same point last year. Felony assaults were up 25%.
This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and may be updated.
