Police have arrested the 17-year-old believed to be responsible for the shooting of a 9-year-old girl in the Bronx Friday night. Billie James, Jr. is accused of firing several rounds into a crowd at Bailey Avenue and West 234th Street in Kingsbridge as he rode by on a bicycle around 9:30 p.m. One of the shots struck 9-year-old Amanda Chauan; she was outside playing with her 5-year-old brother, who was not hit.
Witness Sam Fernandez told the Daily News, "He rode up...like he was trying to see who was out there, and then he did a loop out front. He started shooting from the middle of the street.”
Chauan, who was shot in the stomach, was released from the hospital yesterday. “It was nice seeing my dad for Father’s Day,’’ she told the Post upon her return home, but added, “I feel nervous... My little brother is worse. He doesn’t even want to come outside."
Investigators don't believe that Chauan was James's intended target, but it's unclear who was. James turned himself in last night; he's been charged with Attempted Murder, Assault, Reckless Endangerment, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon.
