Two suspects wanted in the stabbing of an off-duty NYPD detective in the Bronx last week were arrested overnight in Massachusetts, the NYPD said Wednesday morning.
D’Angelo Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejia, 24, were found hiding in the basement of a house in Lynn, Massachusetts, a city northeast of Boston, according to the department.
New York City police detectives assigned to the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force made the arrests with help from the Boston Regional Fugitive Task Force, the NYPD said in a post on X.
The arrests came one day after Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch publicly identified both men and announced they were wanted on charges of attempted murder, robbery and weapon possession in the stabbing of Detective Jose Mercedes.
Police said the two men were on a motorized bike when they approached Mercedes near Rochambeau Avenue and East 206th Street around 2 p.m. Friday. The two men allegedly slashed and stabbed him multiple times before tearing a chain from around his neck. At the time, Mercedes was not wearing anything that would have identified him as a member of the NYPD, and it’s unclear whether the attackers knew he was an officer.
Mercedes was treated for his injuries at Jacobi Hospital. Police said Friday he was in stable condition.
“If you come for one of us, you’ll have the full force of the NYPD coming for you,” the NYPD said in its X post.
The NYPD had no further information as of Wednesday morning about when the two men would return to New York or about their official charges.
