The motorist who allegedly struck and killed a woman on Targee Street in Staten Island on Saturday morning was arraigned yesterday on charges of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and driving while intoxicated, and is being held on $100,000 bail. Estik David Lozano, 19, reportedly admitted to drinking with his 17-year-old sister and friends at Von Briesen Park that night, and said he downed a quarter of a bottle of Chivas. He blew a .16 four hours after the crash.
Victim Brunilda Maldonado had pulled over on Targee Street around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday because her car was overheating. Motorist Daniel Shields had pulled over to help her when Lozano drove by, attempting to maneuver between the two cars and hitting Maldonado in the process. Shields drove off after Lozano, but returned to the scene of the crime after losing him. There, police smelled alcohol on his breath, and he too was arrested for DWI, with a BAC of .10.
Lozano's lawyer said, "He's completely distraught. It's a tragedy. His family are good people." He faces up to seven years in prison for leaving the scene of the accident. Shields was arraigned yesterday too, and is due back in court in September.
