A subway track worker collapsed and died early Wednesday morning while on duty in Brooklyn, the Transport Workers Union announced.

The union said Ricardo Louis, 44, collapsed around 3:10 a.m. while working on an L train at the Morgan Avenue station. Coworkers attempted to revive Louis and called 911. Emergency medical services transported him to Woodhull Hospital, but efforts to save him were unsuccessful, the union said.

Union representatives notified Louis’ family members and met them at the hospital.

In a statement, union President Richard Davis highlighted the dangers transit workers face, including hazardous conditions on subway tracks and delays in accessing medical care.

"[The Transport Workers Union] Local 100 has always fought for better working conditions and we will determine whether any avoidable hazard contributed to this tragic death," Davis said in a statement posted to the union's website. "On behalf of our membership of 44,000 transit workers, I convey deep condolences to the family of Brother Louis and offer them all the resources of the Union as they go forward at this difficult time."

MTA spokesperson Kayla Shults said Louis started working with the agency in 2018.

The union pledged to provide resources to Louis' family.
