Subway Rider Fatally Stabbed In Chambers Street Station

Police are searching for a man suspected of fatally stabbing another man in the Chambers Street subway station on Saturday afternoon. The NYPD says the attack happened shortly before 3 p.m. on the station's J/Z train platform, and that first responders found the victim, who was in his 20s, unconscious with multiple stab wounds to his legs.
The victim was rushed to nearby Downtown Beekman Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say the suspect is approximately 30-years-old, 5'5" tall and 150 pounds, with long black hair, last seen wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. After allegedly stabbing the victim, the man was seen on security camera footage dashing down the 4/5/6 subway platform.
Police sources tell AMNY that the victim was stabbed during a dispute with the suspect. The nature of the argument was unclear, and police have not said whether the two men knew each other. Other sources tell the Post the perpetrator is believed to have fled the station on an uptown 4 train.
The victim's name has been withheld by police pending family notification.
The fatal stabbing occurred amid a decrease in serious subway crime. In late September, the NYPD said investigators were tracking 110 major felonies reported in the subway system in August, down from 206 major felonies in August 2019, the Daily News reports. But there are also far fewer people in the subway system due to the coronavirus pandemic; ridership is down almost 70% compared to this time last year.
