Two pedestrians were killed by drivers in Bath Beach last night, one of whom was a 66-year-old woman struck by a hit-and-run driver blowing through a red light.
Police say that around 7:15 p.m. a driver traveling west on Cropsey Avenue "at an apparent high rate of speed" drove through the intersection near Bay 35th Street "against a steady red light for westbound travel" when they hit 66-year-old Sofiya Ostrovskaya, who was crossing the street with the right of way from south to north.
The NYPD release says that Ostrovskaya was "forced into the air" by the impact. She was pronounced dead at Lutheran Hospital.
The NYPD is still seeking the driver.
Roughly three hours later, a half a mile away, police say 61-year-old John Saldiran walked out of his home on Bay Parkway mid-block near Benson Avenue when the driver of a Lincoln MKT heading north struck him.
Saldiran was pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital. The driver of the Lincoln, 22-year-old Naghman Mehdi, was arrested and charged with driving without a license.
Ostrovskaya and Saldiran were the 115 and 116th pedestrians killed in traffic this year.
