A 67-year-old Long Island man was killed yesterday after an attempted robbery went wrong in Brooklyn's South Slope. According to police, victim Jesus Morales was visiting a friend at 260 18th Street around 7 p.m. Wednesday night, possibly to buy a car, when he was attacked. The suspect apparently threw him to the ground, causing him to fatally strike his head on the pavement.
Morales, who lives in Merrick, was found by paramedics with severe head trauma; he was pronounced dead at Lutheran Medical Center. Police say his wallet and jewelry were taken. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information on the case should contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit their website here.
Update: Above, you can see a photo of the victims wedding band that was removed by the suspect during the robbery.
Update: South Slope News notes that though he lives in Long Island, Morales had a shop in South Slope, Ramirez Travel, located at 579 5th Avenue. Locals remember him as incredibly sweet and friendly:
“Everyone loved him,” Mesbah Abdul told them. “I would always go and buy airline tickets from him, and at one time, even got my car insurance from him. He had such a big heart, and always gave a hand to anyone who needed help. He is going to be missed. I am so heartbroken.”
