Several New Jersey PATH train lines were suspended during Monday morning’s commute after a fire broke out in a train car, sending panicked passengers scrambling toward the exits.
A passenger video posted online shows smoke flooding the car as passengers yell “move” and “open the door.” The view from the platform shows bright orange flames engulfing what appears to be part of the train.
Port Authority officials said the fire broke out around 6:19 a.m. under an eastbound train at the Newport PATH Station in Jersey City. They said 13 people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, and nine were transported to a hospital for further evaluation.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
Hoboken-World Trade Center and Journal Square-33rd Street lines were suspended Monday during the morning rush, resumed service later in the morning. The Hoboken-33rd Street line resumed service around 7:20 a.m., according to PATH officials, and the World Trade Center -Newark line remained operating as normal.
New Jersey Transit trains and buses Nos. 87 and 126 would be cross-honoring tickets, along with the NY Waterway at Hoboken, Brookfield and Midtown according to PATH.
“We truly apologize for this experience and for any concerns over your safety that arose,” PATH commented in a reply to the video on X.
This is story has been updated with more information about service status.
