We know that it's excessively hot out there right now, but when will it... not be?
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the city and immediate suburbs for the entire weekend. Afternoon highs in the mid 90s combined with dew points in the mid 70s will make it feel closer to 105-110 degrees today and tomorrow. We will get the slightest of breaks in temperature and humidity on Sunday but the heat index will still be over 100 degrees. Heat this extreme is dangerous and can result in heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke or death. Take it easy, stay out of the sun, and use air conditioning to keep cool.
This oppressively hot and humid weather is expected to last at least through Monday. The jet stream is way to the north so the steering winds of the atmosphere are just way too weak to dislodge the Bermuda high bringing the muggy conditions. Showers and thunderstorms are likely every afternoon and evening through the weekend, as it won't take much of a poke to get the soupy air churning. With only light winds aloft whatever storms do develop will drift slowly, potentially causing heavy downpours and localized flash flooding.
A weak cold front extending down from a low pressure system that looks to scoot across Canada late Sunday or early Monday will try to push the Bermuda High southward. The front is not going to have much success but if it manages to push south of the city it will give us some slight relief by early next week with highs in the upper 80s and somewhat lower humidity.
