One person died and another was seriously injured after a small plane crashed near Interstate 684 on Thursday, leading to closures at Exit 2 northbound and Exit 3 southbound in Westchester County, according to state officials.
The crash occurred in the town of Harrison, prompting local detours in the area, officials said. Gov. Kathy Hochul said she was briefed on the crash.
“The highway has been closed in both directions as the investigation continues," Hochul said in a statement. "The crash also caused an aviation gas spill, which DEC is working rapidly to contain and clean up. My heart goes out to the loved ones of those on board during this tragic incident, and I am praying for a safe recovery for the injured individual.”
Authorities warned the closure was expected to last for an extended period and urged drivers to avoid the area.
No additional details about the crash or the victims were immediately available.
This story has been updated with comment from Gov. Kathy Hochul.
