Slain Williamsburg landlord Menachem Stark has been accused of stealing $2 million from a creditor. A Brooklyn judge ordered Stark's attorney to account for $2 million in rent money reported missing by German American Capital Corp., a mortgage loan and debt financing group that is a subsidiary of Deutsche Bank. The group says they have heard nothing about the funds since December 1st, and court papers note that Stark "was in financial dire straits" at the time of his death.

Meanwhile, Stark's former business partner Israel Perlmutter has reportedly hired round-the-clock security in the wake of Stark's death. He has not been seen publicly since Stark's murdered body was found on January 3rd. He has reportedly been in hiding, and has hired security guards to provide 24-hour protection.

Perlmutter may be a suspect in the case, though his lawyer is adamant that he was not involved in Stark's January 2nd kidnapping and subsequent murder. And though the NYPD's been tight-mouthed about the investigation, Police Chief Philip Banks, who has been presiding over the case, noted that the case is progressing. "This is a homicide investigation and, of course, it is very sensitive," he told reporters at yesterday's press briefing. "But I will tell you we feel relatively more confident about this investigation than we did a few days ago. We are investigating some leads, some leads are coming in."
