The Islanders may be the lamest teamhave the worst attendance in the NHL, but all that might change once they move out of their decrepit digs at the Nassau Coliseum and into the swank alien picnic basket that is the Barclays Center, which they may be doing as early as 2014. But if the team thinks it's going to be permitted to continue sporting its provincial blue and orange uniforms, the team is an idiot, and has clearly never seen the Mighty Ducks. The uniform is everything.
Separate focus groups comprised of Islanders fans and Brooklynites (is there any cross-over, we wonder?) are currently being held to determine the fate of the team's look, the Post reports. Owner Charles Wang said neither the uniforms nor the highly non-threatening Islanders logo, which we get is supposed to be Long Island but looks a little like a wet clump of yarn, will be changing, but Wang was probably not invited to the focus group and therefore nobody is asking him.
Anyway, rebranding worked wonders for the Nets, whose attendance reportedly rose by more than 3,000 fans after they dumped their their unsightly red jerseys for sleek black and white ones and fled Jersey for Brooklyn.
The question now is: Should the uniforms change, and if so, what should they change to? Should the Islanders stick with the black/white color scheme popularized by the Nets? What about artisanal mayonnaise-white, with truffle-oil green accents? What if their pants are just really tight, with weathered copies of Ulysses pressed into each player's back pocket? What if the New York Times "discovers" that the Islanders have moved to Brooklyn once a week, every week? What if the players hand-stitch their own uniforms, and make extra money by selling matching versions on Etsy? What if we retire tired hipster tropes altogether? You tell us.
