Shot Cop Released From Hospital

Officer Robert Salerno, who was shot three times at close range in a Bronx "ambush," was released from the hospital yesterday. Though his kevlar vest protected him from a shot to the chest, he was shot twice in the lower torso by 57-year-old Santiago Urena, who had just pulled a gun on a home health aide who rejected his romantic advances. He was released from Lincoln Hospital after being treated for nerve damage in his hip and leg. Salerno's mother told the Post, "It’s a very good day."
According to the Daily News, Salerno was the first cop to be shot on duty this year. Fellow officers Robert Klein, Daniel Robbins and Sean Fitzpatrick pulled Salerno out of the apartment after he had been shot and brought him to safety. Salerno's mother told NY1, "now we have one huge extended family. And now I know why my son loves being a New York City police officer."
Police investigators believe that Salerno fired the rounds killed Santiago Urena. After he had been hit twice, Salerno emptied a 16-round clip, hitting Urena in the abdomen, shoulder and temple. The Post is still reporting that Urena's shot to the head was "self-inflicted."
