A man was shot and killed by police in Brownsville after he walked into a precinct and slashed an officer with a butcher knife early Sunday morning, the NYPD said.
According to police, the man first tried to enter the front of the 73rd Precinct but left when he found the door locked. He then went to the back of the building and confronted an officer assigned to station house security. Police said the man pulled out a butcher knife, about 14 inches long, and slashed the officer in the face.
Another officer fired a Taser, but police said it had no effect. The man ran off, and several officers chased him for several blocks, repeatedly instructing him to drop the knife, according to Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera. Police said the man lunged at an officer on Saratoga Avenue near Park Place, and several officers shot him.
It’s not clear how many rounds were fired.
The NYPD said the man was pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital. The slashed officer is recovering and “in good spirits,” Rivera said.
“This incident certainly could’ve turned out very differently,” he said at a news conference Sunday. “An individual walked into a known NYPD building with a large knife and attacked one of our officers.”
Mayor Eric Adams said he visited with the wounded officer at Kings County Hospital on Sunday morning.
"She is going to recover and is in good spirits, but this incident is a reminder of the danger our brave men and women in uniform face every day protecting our city," he said in a post on X. "Thank you for all you do."
Police officials said the entire incident was captured on body-worn cameras and precinct surveillance video.
The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is reviewing the incident.
