si_suspect_dn.JPGWhat police believe is serial burglar is striking fear into the hearts of many residents of Staten Island's North Shore. Burglaries have been reported in at least 13 homes in the West Brighton and Westerleigh neighborhoods since January 19th. The burglar, whose sketch was released yesterday by the NYPD, typically strikes between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. and police believe he has been waiting until residents leave their homes during the day.

Unlit homes without alarm systems or dogs have been targeted. The burglar has been breaking in through a side or rear window to take cash, jewelry and an occasional television set. The rash of burglaries is almost single-handedly responsible for the 40 percent increase in burglaries in the 120th precinct so far this year.

The suspect is believed to be white or Hispanic male, in his late 20s or early 30s. He has been described by two witnesses as wearing a dark woolen cap, gray hoodie and black jacket.
