U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was briefly hospitalized Wednesday to be treated for dehydration, according to his office.

The 74-year-old Democrat sought medical attention after he began feeling lightheaded while exercising at the Senate gym on Capitol Hill, officials said.

Schumer’s office said he was treated and has since returned to work.

“He wants to remind everyone to drink some water and stay out of the heat,” a spokesperson said.

The incident comes as a heat wave continues to grip parts of the Northeast, including Washington, D.C., and New York City.

High temperatures and humidity are expected to persist through Friday in the D.C. area. In New York City, a heat advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Forecasters say New Yorkers can expect another day of extreme heat before temperatures begin to drop Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
