Despite some woeful bleating from Governor Chris Christie, same-sex couples in New Jersey will be able to tie the knot in their home state starting on Monday.
Christie, who vetoed a gay marriage bill back in 2012, has been trying to appeal a State Supreme Court judge's September ruling that the state must allow same-sex couples to marry; yesterday, though, the court said that Christie's arguments attempting to postpone the marriages pending the appeal were not convincing, and the marriages must go on. "The state has advanced a number of arguments, but none of them overcome this reality: same-sex couples who cannot marry are not treated equally under the law today,” Chief Justice Stuart Rabner wrote in his opinion. “The harm to them is real, not abstract or speculative."
The court has ruled that the state must comply with both the US Supreme Court's June ruling recognizing marriage equality and a 2006 NJ ruling that same-sex couples were entitled to the same rights and benefits as heterosexual married couples. Christie, who says he's running for President in 2016very against same-sex marriage, was unable to prove that the state would suffer "irreparable harm" if marriages were allowed to go on during court proceedings, among other requirements. And if you're trying to get gay married in NJ soon, do it quick: if the court rules in favor of Christie's appeal next year, any same-sex marriages that took place between now and then will still be legal.
