The Post has some details on a "violent spate of daytime robberies and assaults on Manhattan subway" that occurred this week, adding that it could be "another indicator the city could be sinking back to the bad old days that once gripped the Big Apple with fear." And an incident on Tuesday was sparked by a confrontation between two gangs at...Strawberry Fields.

One gang ran into the 72nd Street-Central Park West B/C station (jumping the turnstiles). But the other gang "allegedly chased after them, surrounded Oswaldo Leonal, 21, of The Bronx, and stabbed him in the back. The attackers ran out of the station and along West 72nd Street until they were caught by cops. Jeramy Gill, 19, and Antonio Singh, 18, both of Brooklyn, and Ruth Selamy, 17, were charged with gang assault. A fourth suspect, a 15-year-old girl, was also arrested." On the same day, another Brooklyn gang that had been in Central Park was arrested for "allegedly robbing and assaulting two passengers," and "two more afternoon subway attacks were carried out by teens who had come from Central Park, and may have been committed by that same Brooklyn gang."

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne points out subway crime has dropped "from 50 crimes a day in 1990 to 5.3 crimes a day now. Criminality is down from 11 crimes a day in 2001 to 5.3 crimes a day now." Earlier this month, two men were fatally stabbed on a downtown 1 train; they were allegedly in a group of people who were having a "train party" where the theme is to taunt passengers.
