Yesterday it was reported that a Daily News reporter witnessed a Rikers guard assaulting and arresting a visitor after a shouting match. Today, the Post reports that another guard was caught trying to smuggle drugs and cigarettes in order to sell to prisoners. Not the most surefire way to go from rags to riches.
Clarence Carrier, 45, was on-duty yesterday afternoon when he was nabbed with 30 Suboxone pills and eight pouches of tobacco. According to officials, he intended to sell the tobacco to inmates for $20 a pouch, and was going to deliver the Suboxone pills, which is used to treat opiate addiction, to an inmate for an undisclosed amount of money. Carrier is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, promoting prison contraband and official misconduct, and faces up to nine years in prison if convicted of drug possession. There haven't been this many guards getting in trouble at the same time at Rikers since the dog days of Lil Wayne's eight month sentence last summer.
