Guess the NY Post was just off by one game: Eighteen seasons after they beat the Devils to earn the right to play for the Stanley Cup, the Rangers will again face their rivals from across the Hudson River. A dominant defensive effort and goals from Brad Richards and Michael Del Zotto lifted the Rangers to a 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals at Madison Square Garden. The Eastern Conference finals begin Monday on the same ice the Rangers won on Saturday.

Richards scored 92 seconds into the game on a goal assisted by Del Zotto and Carl Hagelin. The game did not see another goal until the third period despite a flurry of Washington chances in the second. That's when Henrik Lundqvist lived up to his reputation and kept Capitals scoreless.

The third period mostly belonged to the Rangers, who took a 2-0 lead when Del Zotto blasted one past Braden Holtby from the slot with 9:55 remaining. But the Capitals got the goal back just 38 seconds later (the announcement of the Del Zotto goal was being delivered over the loudspeaker). Things got even dicier for the Rangers when they took a delay-of-game penalty moments later. But the Capitals power play -- their only one of the night -- looked terrible. They shot the puck on their own net more than they did the Rangers' and allowed what could have been a short-handed goal but was instead ruled a dead puck. Then they committed a penalty of their own.Washington had only four shots in the third period as the Rangers locked it down.

The Rangers won another razor-thin Game 7. In this series, they also won a triple-overtime game and another one in which they tied the score in the final 10 seconds. Expect more low-scoring, close games in the series against the Devils.
