A 72-year-old woman was killed a half a block from her Queens home after a driver ran a red light and struck the car she was riding in.

Police say that Gilda Lascano was riding in a Honda CRV that was traveling west on 111 Avenue in South Ozone Park shortly after 1 a.m. on Tuesday morning, when the car was T-boned by the driver of a Lexus SUV who ran a red light at 126th Street. The car Lascano was riding in smashed into a storefront on 111 Avenue.

The driver of Lascano's car was transported to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition. Lascano died at the scene.

Police said the male driver of the Lexus fled on foot.

Lascano's family told CBS that she was heading home from work, and that she had plans to retire this year.

Through the end of August, at least 149 people have been killed in New York City's streets, including 21 cyclists, 70 pedestrians, and 58 motorists, according to Crash Mapper.
