A Queens man was convicted of attempted murder and other charges for chasing Black Lives Matter demonstrators with a bladed glove in June 2020, District Attorney Melinda Katz said Monday.
Frank Cavalluzzi, 57, of Flushing, was captured on video yelling “I will kill you,” at a group of peaceful protesters, chasing them while waving a glove with serrated blades and later attempting to run them over with an SUV, the district attorney said.
“A dangerous man is going to jail,” Katz said in a statement. “It’s a good day for New York and the First Amendment.”
Cavalluzzi’s attorney did not immediately return a request for comment.
Prosecutors said peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstrators were hanging up signs at an intersection in Whitestone on June 2, 2020 when Cavalluzzi, who was driving by, abruptly stopped his SUV in the street and began screaming profanities and racial slurs, including “You are in the wrong neighborhood.”
He then got out of the SUV, wearing a leather glove with four serrated blades attached, and charged at the group while screaming at them, Katz said. Cavalluzzi then got back in his SUV and threatened to kill the demonstrators before driving onto the sidewalk, the district attorney said.
Following a two-week trial, Cavalluzzi was convicted of nine counts each of attempted murder and first degree attempted assault, seven counts of menacing and one count each of criminal possession of a weapon and reckless driving.
Cavalluzzi’s sentencing is set for Oct. 13. He faces up to 25 years in prison for each count of attempted murder.
