A 1-month-old girl in Queens died Tuesday after being mauled by her family’s 6-week-old puppy, police said.
Officers responded to a 911 call just before 6:40 a.m. at NYCHA's Queensbridge Houses on 12th Street in Long Island City, authorities said. According to police, the infant’s mother had been sleeping beside the child when she awoke to find the German shepherd and pit bull mix biting the baby’s face.
The girl was unresponsive when first responders arrived, police said. EMS workers pronounced her dead at the scene.
The dog has since been removed from the home, according to Councilmember Julie Won, who posted about the incident on social media.
“My heart is broken for the 1-month-old girl who tragically died after being bitten by her family’s dog in the Queensbridge Houses,” she wrote on X. “My sincere condolences to her family during this unimaginable time.”
There have been no arrests, and the city's medical examiner is still working to determine the cause of death.
This is a developing story and may be updated.
