A major service disruption on Thursday evening left thousands of New Yorkers scrambling for alternative ways to reach their destinations during the busy evening commute.
Subway service was thrown into disarray as a power loss on the third rail near 59th Street Columbus Circle halted B and C train operations citywide in both directions, according to the MTA. The agency also said A and D trains were suspended between 125th Street and 59th Street, affecting one of the busiest transit corridors in the city.
Commuters traveling through Midtown and Uptown were being rerouted. Northbound E trains were operating on the M line between West 4 St-Washington Square and 5 Av/53 St to provide an alternative route for some riders, officials said.
Power was eventually restored to the signaling system near Columbus Circle, the MTA said around 7:30 p.m., and A, B, C, D and E trains were running with severe delays in both directions. Riders were advised to consider alternate lines, including the 1, N, Q, R and W, while service recovery efforts continued.
The cause of the power loss was not immediately known. Riders were advised to check the MTA's website or social media channels for the latest updates.
This story has been updated with new information from the MTA.
