Police shot a man in Brooklyn late Friday morning while issuing a warrant for his arrest, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Tarik Sheppard said.
Sheppard said an NYPD officer assigned to a U.S. Marshals task force stopped the man at about 11:50 a.m. while he was driving in East New York. He said the man, whose name police have not released, is wanted for a homicide that took place last May.
An NYPD spokesperson said the police detective struggled with the man while trying to arrest him near the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Liberty Avenue in East New York. During the struggle, an officer shot the man once in the leg, the spokesperson said.
The man was taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition and is expected to survive, an NYPD spokesperson said.
NYPD officers shot and killed eight New Yorkers in 2023, according to data from the Attorney General’s Office. The previous year was the highest on record, with 13 people killed by police across the five boroughs in 2022.
Last month, police shot and killed four New Yorkers. On Dec. 4, 38-year-old Courtney Gordon was leaving a Far Rockaway apartment building after stabbing four relatives to death when he stabbed two police officers, according to police. One officer then shot and killed Gordon.
On Dec. 14, police shot and killed 43-year-old Kent Edwards in Manhattan’s Lower East Side after a two and a half hour standoff, police officials said. The standoff ended when he fired at officers who entered the apartment he locked himself into, according to police officials.
On Dec. 23, police responded to a 911 call about 30-year-old Michael Dotel who was holding a knife to his mother’s throat, police said. An officer shot him in the head, killing him.
On Dec. 29, MTA police officers shot and killed 52-year-old Bashe McDaniel who they said groped a 19-year-old girl at Jamaica Station. The teen took a picture of McDaniel and reported him to officers, who then moved to arrest him, tased him and fatally shot him after police said he fired his gun.
