Police are looking for a 17-year-old boy they said brought a handgun into a high school in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn on Friday.

The student was entering the The Frank J. Macchiarola Educational Complex on Avenue X for sports practice when his bag set off a metal detector just before 3 p.m., an NYPD spokesperson said. School safety staff found a black handgun inside.

The student fled before officers arrived. Police said there were no injuries.

Police said their investigation is ongoing. They are seeking information from the public that could help lead to an arrest.

NYPD data show school safety personnel recovered 57 weapons from New York City schools from January to June, including knives, box cutters and mace.
