Police closed several blocks in Canarsie to search the area after a man’s badly decomposed body was found Friday morning.

Officers responded to a 911 call around 9:20 a.m. in the area of East 93rd Street and Avenue L, where they found an unconscious and unresponsive man, police said. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police officials said the man's body was badly decomposed. They have not disclosed the man’s identity or announced what caused his death.

Police closed Avenue L between 93rd and 95th streets on Friday, and officers went store to store looking for surveillance video.

Erwin Fairweather, who works in the area, said he was passing by at around 9 a.m. when he saw a sanitation truck, bags on the ground and a crowd of sanitation workers and residents gathered.

"They were discussing back-and-forth," Fairweather said. "How did it get here?"

Police have not said precisely how the body was found.

Fairweather called the discovery disturbing.

"That's awful," he said.
